City of
Land Sharks
City of Land Sharks is a racy satirical novel inspired by Ian’s time as a Perth City Councilor and State Member of Parliament in the 1980s and early 1990s. It is intended to be a fun read, with an underlying message and is set in the 2030s to allow another dimension to the story. The three main characters, Diana, Chris and Paula are bound up in a race against time to expose and bring to justice those responsible for a number of corrupt land & development deals that were intended to be kept out of the public eye. The characters are also involved in some complicated and changing personal relationships. The story is set in Perth and Fremantle, Western Australia, but could be translated to many cities around the world.
About the Author
Dr. Ian C. Alexander
Ian was raised in Perth, Western Australia and showed an early interest in matters of social justice and fairness in society. At university his studies in urban geography and town planning – in Perth and London – heightened this interest, as observed that the land market often operates in very unequal and corrupt ways. His academic books and articles drew attention to the adverse impact of urban development on the less well off in society.
Ian’s later work as a consultant and researcher in urban and as lecturer in town planning gave him insight into some ‘dodgy’ practices in town planning and politics. This was reinforced by his subsequent time in local and State politics in the 1980s. That brought him closer to the ‘dark side’ of politics and planning, and sowed the seeds of inspiration for City of Land Sharks.
